Description
Distinguished translator Reza Ordoubadian has translated all five volumes of poetry by the celebrated Iranian poet Forough Farrokhzad (1935–1967). Spanning from her teenage debut to the masterpieces written shortly before her tragic death in a car accident at age 32, these books when read in sequence, chronicle a singular life. They trace a young woman’s journey from feeling trapped by her father, her marriage, and her society, to enduring the heartbreak of losing custody of her son following her divorce. As she rebels against religious and social condemnations, Farrokhzad matures into a profound artist whose private grief ultimately reflects the broader wounds of her nation.
Woven throughout her work are recurring motifs of the caged bird, the mirror, the window, the wall, the garden, wine, and the kiss. By writing with unprecedented candor about female desire, autonomy, loneliness, and the constraints imposed by a male-dominated society, Farrokhzad breaks cultural taboos of her era.
Acclaimed playwright Claudia Barnett has written the preface.
