Description
Sunflower consists of four short stories by exile author Firouz Hejazi. The title of the short stories are: “The Sunflower,” “Through the Window of Philosophical Conscience,” “To the Gemstone City,” and “Days from School.”
The stories critique “empty modernity,” materialism, greed, political and religious hypocrisy, and the decay of human relationships in contemporary society. The contrast of Light versus Dark (Knowledge versus Ignorance). In these stories characters are consumed by clocks, technology, wealth, and status. In contrast a few are searching for spirituality, truth, the enlightenment, and deep human connection.
Returning to one’s roots, celebrating simplicity, the innocence of children, and a firm connection to creation (the sun, plains, rain, and mountains) are motifs.
